The a role for everyone at Bilinga SLSC

At Bilinga Surf Life Saving Club, we’re more than just a surf club — we’re a community. Whether you’re looking to dive into the surf, lend a hand on the sand, or get involved behind the scenes, there’s a place for you here.

We pride ourselves on being a friendly, welcoming club where people of all ages and abilities can contribute, connect, and belong.

In the Water

If you love the ocean, you can play an active role in keeping our beaches safe. From patrolling as a lifesaver to competing in surf sports, or helping with water safety for our Nippers, there are plenty of ways to use your skills and passion in the surf. Training and support are always provided, so you’ll feel confident and capable in your role.

On the Sand

Not everyone needs to get their toes wet to make a difference. Patrols also rely on members who take on vital roles on the beach — like first aid, radio operations, and assisting with Nippers. It’s about being part of the team, helping keep our community safe, and enjoying the camaraderie of patrol life.

In the Clubhouse

If your strengths are more social, organisational, or practical, there’s still a role for you. Our club thrives thanks to members who help with events, fundraising, administration, and keeping the clubhouse running smoothly. You don’t have to be an athlete or an ocean swimmer — your contribution behind the scenes is just as important as those on patrol.

A Lifesaver

Being a lifesaver is about more than just wearing the red and yellow. It’s about protecting our community, working as part of a close-knit team, and developing skills that last a lifetime. At Bilinga SLSC, our lifesavers come from all walks of life — from teenagers earning their Bronze Medallion to parents, professionals, and retirees who want to give back. Whether you’re on patrol keeping swimmers safe, assisting with first aid, or helping at club events, you’ll be part of a proud tradition of service and mateship on our beaches.

Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)

The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) is the first step for many young people on their lifesaving journey. Open to members aged 13 and above, the SRC equips you with the skills to be part of a patrol team, assist in water safety for Nippers, and gain confidence in the surf. You’ll learn vital lifesaving techniques, including rescue skills, first aid, and radio communications — all while building teamwork, leadership, and friendships that last well beyond the beach.

Observer

The Observer role is a great way to get started in lifesaving without needing to hit the water. Observers are trained to scan the beach, identify potential hazards, and support the patrol team with important on-the-sand tasks. It’s a short online course with a simple assessment, making it an accessible option for parents, supporters, and new members who want to contribute. By becoming an Observer, you’ll gain confidence in beach safety and play a valuable part in keeping our community safe.

First Aid

The First Aid award is perfect for members who want to play a hands-on role in helping others. This qualification gives you the skills to provide patient care on the beach, from treating cuts, stings, and sprains through to managing heat-related illness and more serious injuries. You don’t need to be in the water to make a real difference — first aiders are often the calm, capable presence on busy patrol days, ensuring our community receives the care and reassurance they need.

Radio Operator

The Radio Operator role is ideal for members who enjoy clear communication and working as the link between patrol teams, SurfCom, and Support Operations. You’ll learn how to use the lifesaving radio network to keep patrols connected, respond quickly in emergencies, and ensure information flows where it’s needed most. It’s a crucial role for keeping everyone safe, and it suits people who are organised, calm under pressure, and want to contribute without needing to be in the surf.

in the club house

Not every role in lifesaving is on the beach — our club also relies on members who bring their skills and energy into the clubhouse and support roles. From helping with administration and fundraising, to organising social events, cooking the BBQ, or maintaining equipment, these contributions are what keep Bilinga SLSC running smoothly.

You don’t need to be a patrol member to make an impact — if you’ve got time, skills, or just a willingness to help, there’s always a place for you in the red and yellow family.

Where do I begin?
